Main defense: third rank, then check from behind

The defender waits on the 3rd rank while the pawn is below the 6th; the moment it reaches the 6th he switches to checks from behind and draws.

Common mistake

Core idea

The defender keeps the king in front of the pawn and the rook on the 3rd rank, waits, then switches to checking from behind the moment the pawn reaches the 6th rank (no shelter left for the enemy king).

If you're attacking

Try to reach the 6th rank with the king, or provoke the rook off the 3rd rank.

Plans

  • Advance the king with support
  • Provoke a premature rook move

Avoid

  • Pushing the pawn to the 6th too early — it removes your own king's shelter

If you're defending

Hold the draw with the third-rank wait, then deliver perpetual checks from behind.

Plans

  • King in front of the pawn
  • Rook on the 3rd rank, shuffling
  • Wait — don't push or check early
  • Pawn reaches the 6th → rook to the back rank, check from behind
  • Trade into a drawn king-and-pawn ending if offered

Avoid

  • Checking from behind too early
  • Abandoning the 3rd rank
  • Letting the king leave the queening square
